AFL LED - fully adaptive LED headlight system for the new Opel Zafira and Mokka X

Optimal visibility without the risk of dazzling other road users. With the LED AFL system, Opel (www.opelbook.ru/en) offers all the benefits of adaptive cornering and headlights using all LED elements in the van class and SUV models in the compact car segment. The optional AFL LED headlights on the new Opel Zafira and Opel Mokka X emit a bright white light that turns night into day and automatically adapts to driving conditions. The AFL LED system has nine separate lighting functions or modes, such as City Light, Country Light and Stop Mode, which not only improve visibility but also help save energy.

“The widespread use of smart LED lighting technology is the best way to significantly reduce the risks of night driving,” said William F. Bertani, Opel vice president of automotive technology in Europe. "The optional AFL LED headlights for the new Opel Zafira (www.opelbook.ru/en/zafira) and Opel Mokka X are an important step forward in realizing this potential."

Night driving is one of the most dangerous human activities. According to statistics from the German Automobile Club ADAC, almost 30 percent of all fatal accidents occur at night1. Human beings are everyday, i.e. we are active during the day and sleep at night. Therefore, it is unnatural for us to be on the road at night.

As a car manufacturer that traditionally puts customers first, Opel has long recognized the risks night driving poses to car drivers and other road users. Opel was the first automaker to introduce the Adaptive Forward Lighting (AFL) system in 2003 with mid-range bi-xenon lights. The Opel Astra (www.opelbook.ru/en/astra) became the first compact car with cornering lights in 2004, followed by the Zafira in 2005. True to its tradition of democratizing cutting-edge technology, Opel first made the AFL system with halogen lights available on the Corsa in 2006. Opel now offers the AFL system on almost all vehicles in its range.

The new Zafira and Mokka X, with Adaptive Cornering Lights and full LED elements, mark the next key milestone in Opel's introduction of LED lighting technology. Like Astra's matrix lighting system, the AFL LED system provides all the benefits of adaptive headlights without the need for moving elements in the headlights. But instead of turning individual LEDs on and off in various combinations, the AFL LED system adapts to the traffic situation and the presence of other road users by automatically changing the headlight beam profile.

The optional AFL LED headlight system performs nine different functions. At speeds above 55 km/h, the Country Light function enhances illumination of the road and areas in its immediate vicinity when driving in suburban areas. The range of the lights in one's own lane is increased, while the distribution of light in the oncoming lane is reduced to prevent dazzling oncoming drivers. In addition, improved illumination of areas close to the road allows for earlier identification of potential hazards (such as wildlife).

When cornering, the AFL LED system activates the Cornering / Curve Light mode, which turns on an additional left or right LED element that illuminates the roadway in the direction of travel depending on the angle of travel. Steering wheel deflection or turn signal. Turn and turn mode is enabled automatically at speeds below 40 km/h when the turn signal is on and/or when the center position steering angle exceeds a certain limit. Turn and turn mode is disabled when the turn signal is turned off and the steering wheel is returned to the center position. This mode is active until a speed of 70 km/h is reached.

At speeds below 55 km/h, the AFL LED system automatically switches to Town Light mode. Compared to the Country Light mode, its light beam is reduced to the near area in front of the car and wider on the sides due to the low cornering intensity. Improved lighting helps the driver to better see the roadside and avoid potential accidents involving children or pedestrians in a timely manner.

The maneuvering lamp illuminates the area around the vehicle when parking or leaving a parking space forward or backward. In this mode, the turn lights turn on with less intensity when shifting into reverse. Maneuvering mode remains active for 20 seconds after reverse gear or until the vehicle exceeds the 7.0 km/h limit while moving forward.

Touring mode for changing the light profile when driving in reverse, high beams, daytime running lights and the HBA (High Beam Assist) function for automatically turning on / off the high beams, depending on the presence of other road users, give you a full familiarity with the range of functions of the LED AFL systems to improve road visibility.

Additional headlights with AFL LED system in the new Opel Zafira and Opel Mokka X not only help to improve road safety. Compared to other lighting technologies, LED elements also consume significantly less electricity. What's more, Opel's AFL LED headlights take this advantage to a new level by automatically turning on the brake light when the start/stop system turns off the engine. In this mode, the dipped beam remains on and the cornering lights are off, which reduces the overall power consumption of the headlights.
